There has been hot debate between Sony and Nintendo bosses in the media of late, with Nintendo discrediting Sony’s originality over the recent revelation that Sony’s PlayStation 3 controller would, just like the Nintendo Wii’s controller, feature ‘innovative’ motion sensors. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata was the main instigator of the (albeit rather subtle) slanging match, when he was cited as having told the Japanese press “There’s a huge gap between the two, I can tell you, with that whole experience, so I really don’t think that the inclusion of motion sensing into Sony’s classic type of controller can affect in one way or the other the advantage that we have with the Wii controller.”
Both ‘controllers’ do seem provide innovative touches; the Wii controller (Wiimote) will use an entirely new controller formula, allowing single-hand, motion sensing play, while the PlayStation will utilise a DualShake system, though Revolved.net is yet to ascertain the exact details of this.
To conclude, it appears both Sony and Nintendo are ready to offer exciting packages, but it should be taken into consideration that there are more to controllers than innovation, something Nintendo have seemingly overlooked on more than one occasion.
